O seu conteúdo, que humaniza a vida de Jesus e alude de forma subreptícia a uma sua eventual relação matrimonial - ou no mínimo marital - com Maria Madalena, fez com que muitos considerassem o livro blasfemo, entre eles o então secretário de Estado adjunto da Cultura, Sousa Lara, que o vetou duma lista de romances portugueses candidatos a um prémio literário europeu.
